Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S10 smartphones in the first half of 2019. While the US and Chinese variants will come powered by the all-new 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, the other markets will be getting the Exynos-powered variants. Today, the company has launched the flagship Exynos 9820 SoC as the successor to last year’s Exynos 9810 SoC. The Galaxy S10 will be the first smartphone to come powered by the all-new Exynos 9820 SoC.

While the other flagship mobile chips are built on the 7nm FinFET node, Samsung is using the 8nm LPP FinFET for its Exynos 9820 SoC. Using the 8nm process, the Exynos 9820 will be 10% more power efficient than the 10nm Exynos 9810. It supports up to 4K UHD (4096 x 2160 pixels) display resolution and supports LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 3.0/2.1 flash storage.  As seen in the teaser images, the Exynos 9820 also comes with an integrated NPU for processing AI tasks.

Talking about the CPU, the Exynos 9820 packs 2x 4th gen custom cores, 2x Cortex A75 cores, and 4x Cortex A55 cores. While the Kirin 980 came with Mali-G76 MP10 GPU, Samsung is bundling Mali-G76 MP12 GPU with the Exynos 9820. Compared to the Exynos 9810, the CPU on the Exynos 9820 offers 15% better multi-core performance and the GPU offers 40% better performance. On the connectivity front, the LTE Advanced Pro modem on this chipset supports Cat.20 LTE that offers up to 2 Gbps download speeds.

It is mentioned to come with an advanced image signal processor (ISP) that supports up to five sensors, including an IR sensor. The device will be supporting up to 22MP single sensors or 16MP + 16MP dual sensors. The Exynos 9820 supports 8K videos up to 30fps or 4k videos up to 150 fps and can render 10-bit HDR videos. According to the company, the Exynos 9820 will enter mass production by the end of this year.
